The people of Vashon-Maury Island
Mukai Commons is Vashon HouseHold’s newest project. In April 2009 we purchased an apartment complex in the heart of Vashon Town with the aim
of fully renovating 20 units for low income families and individuals. The three buildings were in poor condition, having suffered years of neglect inside and out. With the support of King County and Washington State, we bought the buildings and secured grants to fully rehab every unit.
For a twelve month period in 2009 and 2010, we will replace windows, doors, carpeting, cabinets, counters, appliances and fixtures in most units. Problems with wiring, plumbing and poor insulation will be addressed. We will beautify the building exteriors with new siding, new landscaping and improved parking areas. The plan includes a new laundry facility. When the work is done, Mukai Commons will be a safe, affordable and beautiful place to live.
Mukai Commons will be home to people who cannot afford market-rate rentals. All of the units will be affordable to households that meet federal low-income standards, and half will be affordable to those considered to be very-low-income. Five of the 20 units will be reserved for formerly homeless people.
