Vashon HouseHold and Northwest Housing Development, our non-profit partner, are providing 19 new affordable homes for low-income first-time buyers. Homes at Roseballen Community Land Trust are clustered around a common green and are surrounded by 15 acres of shared, permanently preserved open space. These homes have purchase prices far below market value, ranging from $165,000 to $179,000. They are made affordable through sweat equity, with families and individuals working together under professional construction supervision. Homeowners qualify for government-subsidized mortgage loans with discounted, sliding-scale interest rates.
Roseballen features quality Craftsman-style homes that range in size from an 849 sq. foot two-bedroom home to a 1360 sq. foot five-bedroom home. Single-car garages offer an additional 336 sq. feet. The homes include hardwood floors, front and back porches, new energy-efficient appliances, wood-faced cabinetry, and natural gas furnaces and ranges. The homes face onto a pedestrian-friendly green-belt with walking paths and shared recreation space.
Roseballen Farms and Open Space
In addition to creating and preserving affordable housing, Vashon HouseHold supports our local economy and works to preserve the natural environment. Our Roseballen homes are clustered in a no-sprawl design that includes 15 surrounding acres of permanently preserved open space and farmland. VHH leases 4.5 acres to seven local organic growers who cultivate everything from strawberries to winter vegetables, apples to herbs. Under the terms of our land leases, all growers must use organic methods and sell produce locally. We have also reforested the property with 1000 native trees and shrubs, restoring the damaged watershed by removing acres of invasive species.
